Sunday 8 November

Covid regulations applying to Acts of Remembrance depend on whether war memorials are in churchyards (as in Whittington, Arkholme and Gressingham) or in other public places (as in Hornby) [more information here].

Whittington, Arkholme and Gressingham will each have an open‑air Act of Remembrance in the churchyard, from 10.55am to 11.05am, including the national two minutes silence, as permitted by the regulations applying to churchyards.

Hornby is affected by the regulations applying to war memorials in other public places, and will be following the Royal British Legion advice, asking people not to meet at the war memorial, but instead to keep the 11am silence on their own doorsteps. This will be particularly poignant in Hornby, as everyone in the village will be able to hear the church clock strike at 11am. It is expected that Fr Michael (of Saint Mary’s) and I will lead the prayers, either from our church doors, or by the memorial itself, and one person will be designated to lay each wreath.

The service in Hornby church will begin at 10.45am, with the outside ceremony shown on a screen.

We are hoping to include live coverage of all four local ceremonies online, at the benefice YouTube channel, so that any who are observing the day at home, or on their doorsteps, can follow the full ceremony on a smartphone, tablet, laptop or computer.
